The size of the aperture and the brightness of the scene controls the amount of light that enters the camera during a period of time, and the shutter controls the length of time that the light hits the recording surface. Equivalent exposures can be made with a larger aperture and a faster shutter speed or a corresponding smaller aperture and with the shutter speed slowed down.

Although a range of different shutter devices have been used during the development of the camera only two types have been widely used and remain in use today.

The focal plane shutter operates as close to the film plane as possible and consists of cloth curtains that are pulled across the film plane with a carefully determined gap between the two curtains or consisting of a series of metal plates moving either vertically or horizontally across the film plan. As the curtains or blades move at a constant speed, exposing the whole film plane can takes much longer than the exposure time. For example an exposure of 1/1000 second may be achieved by the shutter curtains moving across the film plane in 1/50th of a second but with the two curtains only separated by 1/20th of the frame width. When photographing rapidly moving objects, the use of a focal plane shutter can produce some unexpected effects. Focal plane shutters are also difficult to synchronise with electronic flash and it is often only possible to use flash at shutter speeds below 1/60th second although in some modern cameras that can be as fast as 1/100second/

The Copal shutter or more precisely the in-lens shutter is a shutter contained within the lens structure, often close to the diaphragm consisting of a number of metal leaves which are maintained under spring tension and which are opened and then closed when the shutter is released. The exposure time is determined by the interval between opening and closing. In this shutter design, the whole film frame is exposed at one time. This makes flash synchronisation much simpler as the flash only needs to fire once the shutter is fully open. This disadvantage of such shutters is their inability to reliably produce very fast shutter speeds and the additional cost and weight of having to include a shutter mechanism for every lens.

A wide range of film and plate formats have been used by cameras. In the early history plate sizes were often specific for the make and model of camera although there quickly developed some standardisation for the more popular cameras. The introduction of roll-film drove the standardisation process still further so that by the 1950s only a few standard roll films were in use. These included 120 film providing 8, 12 or 16 exposures, 220 film providing 16 or 24 exposures, 127 film providing 8 exposures , principally in Brownie 125 cameras and 35mm film providing 12, 20 or 36 exposures - or up to 72 exposures in bulk cassettes for the Leica Camera range.

For cine cameras, 35mm film was the original film format but 16mm film soon followed produced by cutting 35mm in two. An early amateur format was 9.5mm. Later formats included 8mm film and Super 8.

Cameras that capture many images in sequence are known as movie cameras or as ciné cameras in Europe; those designed for single images are still cameras. However these categories overlap. The lens of a camera captures the light from the subject and brings it to a focus on the film or detector. The design and manufacture of the lens is critical to the quality of the photograph being taken. The technological revolution in camera design in the 18th century revolutionized optical glass manufacture and lens design with great benefits for modern lens manufacture in a wide range of optical instruments from reading glasses to microscopes. Auto-focus systems can capture a subject a variety of ways; here, the focus is on the person's image in the mirror.Due to the optical properties of photographic lenses, only objects within a limited range of distances from the camera will be reproduced clearly. The process of adjusting this range is known as changing the camera's focus. There are various ways of focusing a camera accurately. The simplest cameras have fixed focus and use a small aperture and wide-angle lens to ensure that everything within a certain range of distance from the lens, usually around 3 metres (10 ft) to infinity, is in reasonable focus. Fixed focus cameras are usually inexpensive types, such as single-use cameras. The camera can also have a limited focusing range or scale-focus that is indicated on the camera body. The user will guess or calculate the distance to the subject and adjust the focus accordingly. On some cameras this is indicated by symbols (head-and-shoulders; two people standing upright; one tree; mountains).

Rangefinder cameras allow the distance to objects to be measured by means of a coupled parallax unit on top of the camera, allowing the focus to be set with accuracy. Single-lens reflex cameras allow the photographer to determine the focus and composition visually using the objective lens and a moving mirror to project the image onto a ground glass or plastic micro-prism screen. Twin-lens reflex cameras use an objective lens and a focusing lens unit (usually identical to the objective lens.) in a parallel body for composition and focusing. View cameras use a ground glass screen which is removed and replaced by either a photographic plate or a reusable holder containing sheet film before exposure. Modern cameras often offer autofocus systems to focus the camera automatically by a variety of methods.[8]

Camera obscura.The forerunner to the camera was the camera obscura.[1] The camera obscura is an instrument consisting of a darkened chamber or box, into which light is admitted through a convex lens, forming an image of external objects on a surface of paper or glass, etc., placed at the focus of the lens.[2] The camera obscura was described by the Arabic scientist Ibn al-Haytham (Alhazen) in his Book of Optics (1015–1021).[3] The actual name of camera obscura was applied by mathematician and astronomer Johannes Kepler in his Ad Vitellionem paralipomena of 1604. He later added a lens and made the apparatus transportable, in the form of a tent.[4][5] Irish scientist Robert Boyle and his assistant Robert Hooke developed a portable camera obscura in the 1660s.[6]

The first camera that was small and portable enough for practical use was built by Johann Zahn in 1685, though it would be almost 150 years before chemical technology caught up to the point where photography was practical. Early photographic cameras were essentially similar to Zahn's model, though usually with the addition of sliding boxes for focusing. Before each exposure, a sensitized plate would be inserted in front of the viewing screen to record the image. Jacques Daguerre's popular daguerreotype process utilized copper plates, while the calotype process invented by William Fox Talbot recorded images on paper.

The first permanent colour photograph, taken by James Clerk Maxwell in 1861.The first permanent photograph was made in 1826 by Joseph Nicéphore Niépce using a sliding wooden box camera made by Charles and Vincent Chevalier in Paris. Niépce built on a discovery by Johann Heinrich Schultz (1724): a silver and chalk mixture darkens under exposure to light. However, while this was the birth of photography, the camera itself can be traced back much further. Before the invention of photography, there was no way to preserve the images produced by these cameras apart from manually tracing them.

The development of the collodion wet plate process by Frederick Scott Archer in 1850 cut exposure times dramatically, but required photographers to prepare and develop their glass plates on the spot, usually in a mobile darkroom. Despite their complexity, the wet-plate ambrotype and tintype processes were in widespread use in the latter half of the 19th century. Wet plate cameras were little different from previous designs, though there were some models, such as the sophisticated Dubroni of 1864, where the sensitizing and developing of the plates could be carried out inside the camera itself rather than in a separate darkroom. Other cameras were fitted with multiple lenses for making cartes de visite. It was during the wet plate era that the use of bellows for focusing became widespread.

The first colour photograph was made by Scottish physicist James Clerk Maxwell, with the help of English inventor and photographer Thomas Sutton, in 1861[7]

The electronic video camera tube was invented in the 1920s, starting a line of development that eventually resulted in digital cameras, which largely supplanted film cameras after the turn of the 21st century.

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., February 1, 2010 – After reviewing more than 10,000 entries, Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging, today announced that Casey Berner, 19, of Illinois and Justin Tijerina, 15, of Texas have been named the winners of the Adult and Teen Divisions of the Canon U.S.A. and Pro Football Hall of Fame "Why Do You Love Football?" photo challenge, respectively. Each has won a trip for four to attend Super Bowl XLIV in South Florida along with a trip for four to the 2010 Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival n August, where their winning photos will be on display in the Hall of Fame.

The winning photo submitted by Berner, called "Impact," was taken just as two high school football players collided in mid-air. When Berner took the photo, he knew it was a good one and immediately e-mailed it to his dad. Berner is currently a freshman at the University of Missouri, studying photojournalism.

To capture the photo entitled "Luke Catch," Tijerina recalled focusing on #3 as he ran down the field. "It was hard to hold my shutter button finger back from taking the shot because I was afraid I would miss him catching the ball," said Tijerina. "Once I took it, I knew it had to be good."

"This photo contest continues to be an important part of Canon's association with the National Football League," said Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Consumer Imaging Group, Canon U.S.A. "The quality of photographs we receive year after year continues to impress. The adoption of MPEG-2 Full HD (MPEG-2 4:2:2P@HL compliant) compression enables the recording of 1,920 x 1,080-pixel full high-definition video. Additionally, compared with the 4:2:0 profile format used in HDV and other standards, 4:2:2 color sampling offers twice the volume of color data, providing double the level of color resolution.

Maximum 50 Mbps data recording

With approximately twice the data volume of HDV, the new codec supports higher resolution and increased color data to enable the recording of high-quality video.

Industry-standard MXF*2 file format

MXF (Material eXchange Format) is a widely supported open source file format for the recording of video and audio and metadata, developed to suit the latest editing systems used by broadcasters.

Canon partners with major editing and processing software developers

To support the swift adoption of its new MPEG-2 Full HD (4:2:2) file-based recording codec, Canon is working in cooperation with Adobe Systems Incorporated, Apple Inc., Avid Technology, Inc. and Grass Valley to ensure compatibility with major editing and processing software programs widely used within the video imaging industry. ทำความสะอาดช่องมองภาพ

กล้องถ่ายภาพส่วนมากจะมีชิ้นส่วนที่เป็นยางอยู่หลายชิ้น เช่น บริเวณกริปของตัวกล้อง ยางรองช่องมองภาพ การทำความสะอาดชิ้นส่วนเหล่านี้สามารถทได้โดยใช้คอทตอนบัทชุบทินเนอร์ แล้วบีบให้แห้งหมาด ๆ จากนั้นเช็ดบนชิ้นส่วนที่เป็นยางเบา ๆ ให้ทั่ว ควรระวังอย่าใช้ทินเนอร์มากเกินไป และการเปื้อนไปโดนชิ้นส่วนอื่นข้างเคียง ซึ่งจะให้ลายที่พิมพ์บนตัวกล้อง หรือพื้นผิวเสียหายจากแอลกอฮอล์ จากนั้นเป่าให้แห้งด้วยลูกยางเป่าลม

ช่องใส่ Memory card
ช่องใส่ Memory card เป็นช่องทางหนึ่งที่ทำให้ฝุ่นสามารถเข้าไปอยู่ในตัวกล้อง การทำความสะอาดช่องใส่ Memory card สามารถทำได้โดยการใช้ลูกยางเป่าลม เป่าไล่ฝุ่นตามซอกต่าง ๆ หรือใช้สเปรย์อัดอากาศเป่า แต่การใช้สเปรย์ทำความสะอาด สิ่งที่ต้องระวังคือ ไม่ควรสอดปลายท่อเข้าไปในช่องใส่ Memory card และอย่าเป่าใกล้เกินไปนัก เนื่องจากความเย็นของอากาศจากสเปรย์จะทำให้เกิดความชื้นในตัวกล้องถ่ายภาพ จากนั้นใช้แปรงปัดตามซอกอีกครั้ง

ช่องใส่แบตเตอรี่

เรามาเริ่มที่อุปกรณ์ที่เราต้องเตรียมนะครับ
กล้อง: ซึ่งควรจะเป็นกล้อง DSLR แล้วปรับไปโหมด “B” (blub) นะครับ ซึ่งจริงๆแล้วกล้องคอมเพคโหมดถ่ายพุลก็ใช้ได้ครับ แต่ว่ามันไม่ค่อยยืดหยุนในการใช้งานเท่าไรนะครับ

เลนส์: ช่วงที่น่าใช้จะเป็นช่วงกว้างไปถึงนอมอลซะส่วนใหญ่นะครับเช่น 10-22 mm, 16-35 mm, 18-55 mm, 24-70mm, เป็นต้นนะครับ การเลือกช่วงเลนส์นี้ต้องขึ้นอยู่กับระยะทางของเรากับพลุและก็ขนาดของพลุด้วยนะครับว้ามีขนาดใหญ่เท่าไร โดยปกติแล้วผมใช้ เลนส์ช่วง10-22 mm สำหรับ กล้อง DSRL แบบตัวคุณนะครับ

สถานที่ในการถ่ายภาพพลุถ้าให้ดีควรถ่ายจากบนตกสูงซึ่งห่างจากพืนที่ซัก 500 เมตรถึงหนึ่งกิโลเมตรและเราต้องสามารถที่จะหมุนกล้องโดยไม่ติดสิ่งกีดขวางนะครับ และนอนกจากนั้นควรเป็นทิศเหนือลมด้วยครับ ถ้าเราไม่สามารถหาตึกสูงได้ก็พยายามหาพื้นที่ที่เราสามารถเห็นพลุได้ง่ายแทนก็พอได้ครับ

ไปก่อนเวลายิ่งเร็วยิ่งดี

เพื่อนๆไปถึงสถานที่จัดแสดงพุลก่อนยิงเร็วเท่าไรยิ่งดีครับ เพราะว่าเราจะได้มีเวลาเลือกสถานที่นะครับ ผมรับรองเลยว่าวันแสดงดอกไม้ไฟนั้นคนจะมากมายเลยครับ

เตรียมตัวก่อนการถ่ายภาพพลุ

1. ไปถึงสถานที่ที่จัดแสดงดอกไม้ไฟก่อนเวลาครับ ไปยิ่งเร็วยิ่งดีครับ เลือกพื้นที่ที่เราสามารถเห็นดอกไม้ไฟได้ง่ายไม่มีอะไรมาบังกล้องเรา นอกจากนั้นเราควรจะต้องมีองค์ประกอบภาพอื่นๆด้วยเช่น ตึก แม่น้ำ สะพาน และอื่นๆซึ่งช่วยให้ภาพน่าสนใจมากกว่าที่จะเห้นแค่ตัวพลุอย่างเดียวครับ ผมให้ความสำคัญของพื้นที่ที่เราถ้ายมากครับเพราะว่าจะทพให้ภาพเราดูดีไม่ดีนี้ขึ้นกับสถานที่ที่เราไปถ่ายมากเลยนะครับ

2. ตั้งกล้องให้มั่นคงบนขาตั้งกล้อง

3. ตั้งค่ากล้องคร่าวๆดังนี้

โหมดของกล้อง: M, Manual

โฟกัส: Off or Manual

ISO: 100

ความเร็วชัตเตอร์: Bulb, B

ค่ารูรับแสง: ช่วงประมาณ F8 to F11

ความยาวโพกัส: พยายามโพกัสไปที่จุดไกลๆแล้วทำการปรับโฟกัสให้เป็น Manual นะครับ

ชนิดของไฟล์ภาพ: ผมแนะนำ RAW ไฟล์นะครับเพราะว่าเราสามารถกลับมาปรับแต่งภาพหลังได้ยืดหยุ่นมากขึ้นครับ

เมมโมรี่การ์ด: 4 กิ๊กขึ้นไปยิ่งดีครับ เพราะว่าจะได้ไม่เสียโอกาในการได้ภาพในกรณีที่เมมโมรี่การ์ดเต็มนะครับ

ค่า white balance: ปรับเป็บ auto ก็ได้ครับ ถ้าเราต้องการเปลี่ยนแล้วค่อยกลับมาเปลี่ยนที่หลังในช่วงที่เราทำการโพรเสทไฟล์ RAW นะครับ

4. ทำการจัดองค์ประกอบภาพโดยส่วยตัวผมก็จะหาฉากหน้า/ฉากหลังโดยเอาพวกตึกรามบ้านช่อง สะพาน แม่น้ำ ทะเลสาป ฯลฯ เข้ามาเป็นส่วนประกอบด้วย เราสามมารถจัดภาพแบบทั้งแนวตั้งและแนวนอนครับ ขึ้นอยู่กับว่าลักษณะของพลุของเราเป็นอย่างไร ถ้าพลุมีขนาดใหญ่ๆสูงๆเราก็อาจจะต้องตั้งภาพแนวตั้ง แต่ถ้าพลุออกมาเป็นกลุ่มๆแนวนอนเราก็จะอาจจะตั้งองค์ประกอบแนวนอนครับ

5. ตั้งสายลั่นชัตเตอร์และระดับน้ำ

ถึงเวลาถ่ายภาพพลุกันแล้ว

1. เมื่อเสียงพลุดังขึ้นก็ได้เวลาเริ่มความสนุกของเราแล้ว เพื่อนๆก็เริ่มกดปุ่มของสายลั่นชัตเตอร์เพื่อทำการเก็บภาพ ในขณะนี้เพื่อนๆก็ชมพลุไปด้วยเลยครับ เมื่อพลุจางหายไปก็ให้ปล่อยปุ่มของสายลั่นชัตเอตร์นะครับ ซึ่งโดยปกติแล้วก็ใช้เลาประมาณ 5-10 วินาที ขึ้นอยู่กับลักษณะดอกไม้ไฟของเรา

ภาพแลกที่เราถ่ายมาแล้วนั้น ให้เราทำการมองที่ LCD แล้วตรวจสอบว่าภาพที่ได้มาโอเคไหม พลุนั้นใหญ่หรือเล็กไปไหมกับเฟรมที่ตั้งไว้ ความสว่างของภาพดีไหม องค์ประกอบโดยรวมเป็นไงบ้าง เพื่อที่เราจะได้ทำการแก้ไขก่อนที่จะถ่ายพลุส่วนที่เหลือ พลุชุดสวยส้วนมากจะอยู่หลังๆครับ เพราะฉะนั้นจึงภาพของพลุใบแรกๆนั้นเราอาจจะต้องเป็นใบสำหรับทดสอบไปครับ

2. ถ้าเพื่อนๆต้องการถ่ายภาพพลุหลายๆลูกในภาพเดียวกันให้ทำดังนี้ครับ

o เมื่อเราถ่ายภาพพลุลูกแรกได้แล้ว ให้เราเอาหมวกดำหรือผ้าดำมาบังหน้าเลนส์นะครับเพื่อที่จะไว้ป้องกันแสง ซึ่งตอนนี้เรายังต้องไม่ปล่อยปุ่มของสายลั่นชัตเตอร์นะครับ

12 Tips for Improving Camera Phone Photos

We are living in a time where ‘convergence’ is everywhere. Gone are the days when a camera was a camera, a MP3 player was an MP3 player, a phone was a phone….

These days digital cameras are found in a variety of other gadgets – including cell phones. In fact Camera Phones are one of the fastest growing segments of the digital camera market and with the improvements in the quality of what is being offered in some phones (higher megapixels, better lenses, high capacity storage) some believe that they are beginning to win market share away from the low end offerings of many digital camera manufacturers. Our current poll on ‘take anywhere cameras‘ reveals that many of you are using camera phones regularly.

Unfortunately many of the pictures being taken with Camera Phones are poor in quality. This might partially be a result of lower quality cameras – but it is also often a result of poor photographic technique.

Following are 13 tips for Camera Phone owners to help them get the most from their cameras phones:

The better lit your subject is the clearer your image is likely to be. If possible shoot outside or turn on lights when shooting inside. If you’re turning on lights in a room to add extra light to your shot be aware that artificial light impacts the color cast in your shots and you might want to experiment with white balance to fix it (see below).

Some cameras come with a built in flash or light – this can really lift a shot and add clarity to it, even if you’re shooting outside (in a sense it becomes a fill flash). If your camera doesn’t have a flash or light you should avoid shooting into bright lights as you’ll end up with subjects that are silhouetted.

2. Get Close to Your Subject
One of the most common mistakes with camera phone images is that their subject ends up being a tiny, unrecognizable object in the distance. Camera phone images tend to be small due to low resolution (although this is changing) – so fill up your view finder with your subject to save having to zoom in on the subject in editing it later (which decreases quality even more).

Having said this, getting too close on some model camera phones creates distortion and focusing issues (particularly if the camera phone doesn’t have a macro or close focusing mode).

3. Keep Still
As with all digital photography, the more steady your camera phone is when taking your shot the clearer your image will be.

This is especially important in low light situations where the camera will select longer shutter speeds to compensate for the lack of light. One trick is to lean your camera phone (or the hand holding it) against a solid object (like a tree, wall, ledge) when taking shots.

Keep in mind that many camera phones also suffer from ’shutter lag’ (ie the time between when you press the shutter and when the camera takes the shot can be a second or so). This means you need to hold the camera still a little longer to ensure it doesn’t take a shot as you’re lowering it away from the subject.

4. Edit Images Later
Whilst it can be fun to use your camera phone’s inbuilt editing and effects, editing pictures later on your computer produces much better quality images. Take your shots in color at high resolution to keep your options open on how to treat it later.

You can always make it black and white on your computer, but you can’t make it color if you take it in Black and White mode.

Remember that on many phones the quality of the screen will not be as good as your computer’s. So if possible hang onto your shots until you can get them on your PC. You might just find that they come alive on a quality monitor. You’ll also find that even ‘mistakes’ and blurred shots can actually be quite usable (in an abstract kind of way)

6. Avoid Using the Digital Zoom
As tempting as it might be to zoom in on your subject when taking your picture (if you have a zoom feature on your camera phone), if the zoom is a ‘digital zoom’ it will decrease the quality of your shot to use it (you’ll end up with a more pixelated shot)..

Plus you can always edit your shot later using photo editing software on your computer.

Of course some camera phones are beginning to hit the market with ‘optical zooms’ – these are fine to use as they don’t enlarge your subject by enlarging pixels.

7. Experiment with White Balance
An increasing number of camera phones come with adjustable white balance which allows you to modify color balance in your images based on shooting conditions. Experiment with this feature to get a good feel for the impact that it has on your shots. I find that it impacts different camera phones differently. Read your manual to find out how it works on your phone.

The beauty of all forms of digital photography (including that of camera phones) is the ability to shoot off many shots quickly and without cost. This means you can experiment with different modes and composition and discard those that you don’t want to keep.

Camera phones are particularly good for experimenting with new angles and perspectives – shoot from down low, up high, close up etc and you’ll end up with interesting and fun shots.

9. Follow Rules of Composition (and then Break them)
Learn some basic composition ‘rules’. (for example – the rule of thirds – ie don’t place your subject squarely in the middle of your frame but a third of the way in). Simple tips like this can bring life toyour photos.

But then also remember that the beauty of a camera phone is its ability to break all conventions – some of the best shots around break all the rules. So shoot from the hip, the floor, up high, up close – anything goes.

10. Keep Your Lens Clean
One of the challenges with many camera phones is keeping them maintained and clean. Phones spend a lot of time in pockets, in bags and being used in all manner of weather and conditions. As a result they get dirty and can easily become damaged – fingerprints are a common problem on camera lenses – especially if your phone doesn’t have a lens cover. From time to time clean the lens of your camera using a soft cloth (sunglasses cleaning cloths are great).

While there is no formal set of rules for using camera phones – it is worth considering how you use it and what impact it might have upon others. There are many cases of camera phones being abused to take sneaky or voyeuristic photos. Ask permission to photograph strangers, consider restrictions on the use of cameras in places like theaters and concerts etc.

12. Use the highest resolution possible on your camera phone
Some phones allow you to choose what resolution you want to take photos at. It almost goes without saying (but we like to state the bleeding obvious) that the higher your resolution the clearer your shot will be. This is especially true for camera phones which often have sensors of under 1 megapixel in them. Keep in mind however that the higher the resolution the larger the file size of the images you take – this means if you want to send images they can end up taking a long time to send.
